MORGANTOWN, W.Va.– West Virginia University Director of Athletics Shane Lyons unveiled the 2018 cross country schedule on Tuesday.
The Mountaineers are set to travel to five regular-season meets before embarking on postseason action, highlighted by three total visits to Penn State, the site of the 2018 Mid-Atlantic Regional meet. The campaign leads up to the team's ultimate goal of competing at the 2018 NCAA Cross Country Championships in Madison, Wisconsin.
"I feel this schedule serves the purpose of providing opportunities to allow a team that is rebuilding to continue to remain competitive on the national scene," said WVU coach Sean Cleary, who is entering his 12th year at the helm in 2018. "The Big 12 and NCAA Regional meets will always be the focal point for this program. This schedule provides the type of competitiveness that will prepare them for our championships."
The Mountaineers' season begins on Friday, Aug. 31, at the Charlotte Opener in Concord, North Carolina. From there, WVU will make its first of three stops at Penn State for the Spiked Shoe Invitational on Friday, Sept. 7.
After a week away from competition, WVU will compete at the Lock Haven XC Open, on Saturday, Sept. 22, in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania. Then, WVU will travel to a meet on the weekend of Sept. 28-29, which is to be announced. West Virginia returns to University Park for the Penn State National Open on Friday, Oct. 12.
Postseason competition begins at the 2018 Big 12 Cross Country Championship, on Friday, Oct. 26, in Ames, Iowa. The Mountaineers finished fourth at the conference meet last fall.
The NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional is set for Friday, Nov. 9, in University Park, marking the Mountaineers' third trip to the home of the Nittany Lions this fall. The NCAA Championships, hosted by Wisconsin, is scheduled for the following weekend on Saturday, Nov. 17, at the Zimmer Championship Course in Madison.
