MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rowing team opened competition at the 2018 Big 12 Rowing Championship in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, on Saturday.
On the first day of the eight-team, two-day event on Melton Hill Lake, the Mountaineers' second varsity four advanced to tomorrow's Grand Final. The crew earned a fourth-place finish in the second of two heats to earn the Grand Final appearance. The first varsity eight, second varsity eight and first varsity four also advanced to tomorrow's Petite Final.
The championship concludes with the finals in four events on Sunday at 9 a.m. ET. Live results, a video stream and more championship information can be found on Big12sports.com. Along with WVU, the championship field features Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, No. 3 Texas and affiliate members Alabama, Old Dominion and Tennessee. Sunday's finals will determine the conference's automatic bid to the 2018 NCAA Rowing Championships.
"We're pleased with the effort put forth by each of our crews today," said coach Jimmy King. "Despite the unevenness of this season's training due to many factors, our team responded very well over the past two weeks with solid training. Their racing was of very good quality today, and tomorrow, we'll strive to finish the year with even better racing."
In the second varsity four, West Virginia completed the 2,000-meter course in 8:07.315, placing fourth, to earn a spot in the Grand Final. The Mountaineers will race in lane seven, alongside Kansas State, Tennessee, Texas, Oklahoma, Alabama and Kansas.
The day began with the first varsity eight, where WVU placed fourth in the first heat. The Mountaineers finished in 7:12.607, just 11 seconds behind Kansas and a Grand Final berth. WVU will face Old Dominion in Sunday's Petite Final.
In the second varsity eight, WVU competed in the second heat and placed fourth in 7:17.476. West Virginia will meet Old Dominion in the Petite Final.
