
Sixteen Named to Academic All-Big 12 Team

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Sixteen members of the West Virginia University rowing team were named to a 2018 Academic All-Big 12 Rowing Team, as announced by the conference on Thursday.
Twelve Mountaineers, seniors Aria Asselta (marketing), Abbigail Rees (clinical rehabilitation and mental health), Jacqueline Spiropoulos (sociology and anthropology); juniors Amy Hoaglund (multidisciplinary studies), Carly Ledbetter (graphic design), Abigail Patrick (management), Kaitlin Sullivan (nursing), Elizabeth Young (history) and sophomores Hannah Hammon (graphic design), Madisyn Lee (criminology), Lize Morris (nursing), Alexandria Young (biology), Kaitlin were named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team.
The award marks the third time that Asselta, Rees and Spiropoulos have received first-team honors. Hoaglund, Ledbetter and Young are receiving the award for the second time.
Four rowers also earned recognition from the league with junior Dana Bishop (criminology) and sophomore Gabrielle Boylan (nursing), Lindsay Krawczyk (nursing) and Morgan McCoy (secondary education) earning Academic All-Big 12 Second Team honors.
"Our coaching staff values and appreciates the academic successes of our team members and we're always happy to see their efforts recognized," coach Jimmy King said. "Thanks, go to our academic advisor, Samantha Spurlock, and the counselors and many tutors who work with our team throughout the year."
To earn first-team honors, student-athletes must maintain a GPA of 3.2 or better and have participated in at least 60% of the team's scheduled competitions. To qualify for the second-team, student-athletes must finish with a GPA between 3.0 and 3.19. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria expect percent of participation.
The Mountaineers return to the water on Saturday, May 12, and Sunday, May 13, for the Big 12 Championship on Melton Lake in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
