Four Mountaineers Top Regional Rankings

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Four members of the West Virginia University track and field team hold the top spot in their respective events in this week's United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) regional rankings.

Redshirt senior Amy Cashin tops the region in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, while redshirt senior Maggie Drazba continues to sit atop the region in the 10,000 meters. Two Mountaineers also rank No. 1 in field events, as redshirt junior Madelin Gardner owns the region's best mark in the pole vault, while junior Danique Bryan is the regional leader in the triple jump.
In all, eight Mountaineers are featured in seven events this week's regional index, which lists the season's top-eight performances in each event.
Cashin broke the school record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with her victory at the 2018 Penn Relays, on April 26, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She recorded a time of 9:59.40, becoming the first Mountaineer to ever break the 10-minute barrier in the event. The performance topped Cashin's previous WVU-best time of 10:01.19 from 2017 and ranked as the fourth-fastest time in Penn Relays history. The mark is No. 1 in the Big 12 and No. 8 nationally this outdoor season.
The Werribee, Victoria, Australia, native also ranks sixth in the Mid-Atlantic in the 1,500 meters after her time of 4:20.29 at the Virginia Challenge on April 21, which sits No. 2 in the Big 12 this season.
Gardner's school-record jump of 4.41 meters (14 feet, 5.50 inches) at the Virginia Challenge (April 20) tops the region's pole vault rankings again this week. The Williamstown, West Virginia, native broke her previous outdoor school-record mark of 4.13 meters from 2017 with the performance. The mark sits No. 1 in the Big 12 and No. 6 nationally this season.
Senior Sara Finfrock joins Gardner in the region's pole vault rankings this week, sitting at No. 4 with a mark of 4.02 meters (13 feet, 2.25 inches) from the Bison Outdoor Classic, on April 14, in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania.
Drazba earned a time of 33:41.71 in the 10,000 meters at the Stanford Invitational on March 30. The mark is good for No. 3 in the Big 12 and has led the region for the past five weeks.
Joining Drazba in the 10,000 meters rankings are redshirt sophomore Olivia Hill, who ranks No. 3 with a time of 34:47.73 from the Stanford Invitational, as well as redshirt senior Jillian Forsey, who tallied a 35:21.96 at the Virginia Challenge on April 21, for the No. 6 spot.
Bryan ranks in the region's top eight in two events. She leads the Mid-Atlantic in the triple jump with a mark of 12.58 meters (41 feet, 3.25 inches) from the Virginia Challenge on April 21. She also is slotted No. 4 in the long jump after posting a mark of 6.16 meters (20 feet, 2.5 inches) at the Virginia Grand Prix on April 28.
Additionally, redshirt senior Meghan Jean-Baptiste ranks No. 6 in the heptathlon after earning a total of 4,388 points at the Virginia Challenge, from April 20-21.
As a team, WVU ranks No. 6 in the Mid-Atlantic Region this week, the team's highest ranking of the 2017-18 outdoor campaign.
The Mountaineers close the outdoor regular season at the Billy Hayes Invitational on Friday, May 4, in Bloomington, Indiana.
