April 12, 2018 02:29 PM | Tennis
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team continues its conference slate this weekend with a swing through the Lone Star State, as the Mountaineers take on No. 25 Baylor on Friday, April 13, and No. 5 Texas on Sunday, April 15.
"It's exciting to know that at least one of these teams will be contending for the Big 12 title and those are the teams that we want to challenge ourselves against," fifth-year head coach Miha Lisac said. "Those for me are the most exciting matches, going up against teams that require you to be at your best and require you to go all out. You challenge yourself and you see where you stand."
WVU's Lyn Yuen Choo and Giovanna Caputo are tied for the team lead with eight singles wins apiece this season. The doubles pair of Choo and Paula Goetz pace the team with a record of 9-3 at the No. 2 slot this season.
Friday's contest is slated to begin at 6 p.m. ET, and will take place at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco, Texas. Fans can watch the match live at Baylorbears.com. Fans wishing to follow the live stats of the match can do so here.
Baylor enters the match with a 12-11 record on the season after splitting a pair of matches last weekend. The Lady Bears fell to No. 13 Texas Tech, 4-0, on April 6, and defeated TCU, 4-3, on April 8. BU also will face Louisiana Tech in the first match of a doubleheader on Friday, beginning at 11:30 a.m. ET.
Camilla Abbate leads the way for the Lady Bears in singles play with a record of 15-5 this season. Livia Kraus ranks second on the team with 14 wins and boasts a five-match winning streak. The doubles tandem of Kristina Sorokelet and Jessica Hinojosa are ranked No. 80 in the latest Oracle/ITA doubles rankings.
On Sunday, WVU squares off with No. 5 Texas. First serve from the new Texas Tennis Center is set for noon ET. Sunday's contest will be televised live on the Longhorn Network and can be streamed through the WatchESPN and the ESPN app. Live stats also will be available here.
Texas enters the weekend with a 16-4 record, including an 11-match winning streak, and features three ranked singles players and a ranked doubles team. The Longhorns are led by the No. 1-ranked singles player in the country, sophomore Bianca Turati. Bianca's twin sister, Anna, places at No. 27, and Petra Granic is ranked at No. 75 in the latest Oracle/ITA singles rankings. Granic and Bojana Markovic are the lone doubles team ranked for Texas, checking in at No. 45.
