MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Former McDonald's All-American forward De'Janae Boykin will join the West Virginia women's basketball team, as announced by coach
Mike Carey on Wednesday.
After originally signing with UConn, Boykin comes to Morgantown from Penn State. She started 29 games for the Nittany Lions in 2017-18, averaging 7.6 rebounds per contest to lead the Nittany Lions. In addition to averaging 5.8 points per game, the Springdale, Maryland, native accrued 14 steals, 22 blocks and 48 assists on the year. She ranked fourth on the team in minutes per game at 29.4 and was third in blocked shots. The 6-foot-2 Boykin joined the Nittany Lions in the spring of 2016 and played the second half of the 2016-17 season due to NCAA transfer rules.
"De'Janae is a player we recruited out of high school, so we're very familiar with her," Carey said. "She is a player that will have an immediate impact on our team, especially at the three and the four. We look forward to having her on our roster."
Boasting a strong history with USA Basketball, Boykin owns a trio of gold medals from international competition with Team U.S.A. She represented her country at the 2014 FIBA U-17 World Championships and the 2013 FIBA Americas U-16 Championship. Additionally, she teamed with Napheesa Collier, Arike Ogunbowale and Katie Lou Samuelson to claim gold in 3-on-3 play at the 2014 Youth Olympic Games.
While competing for C.H. Flowers High, Boykin earned Naismith Trophy Third Team All-American honors as a senior and was the Gatorade Maryland Player of the Year as a junior. She tallied 1,225 career points and 659 rebounds in three seasons under coach Patrice Frazier-Watson. Boykin was Named Washington Post First Team All-Met and First Team All-Prince George's County as a junior. She ranked as a top-10 recruit in a pair of publications and was rated as the No. 23 overall prospect by the Collegiate Girls Basketball Report and ESPN/HoopGurlz. In addition to earning McDonald's All-America honors, Boykin was selected to play in the inaugural Jordan Brand Classic. She played AAU ball for Boo Williams.
