Cashin crossed the finish line in 4:40.15 in the preliminary race, finishing in fifth place in her heat and sixth overall. With the performance, the Werribee, Victoria, Australia, native advanced to Saturday's event final at Texas A&M University's Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium. The race is set for 5:20 p.m. ET.
"Amy was fantastic tonight," WVU coach Sean Cleary said. "I thought she ran a near-perfect race to put herself in position to qualify for the final. Amy joins a very exclusive club in garnering this honor. Tomorrow provides one last hurrah for what has been an outstanding indoor career at WVU."
Cashin, who took part in her first indoor national meet of her collegiate career on Friday, opened the two-day competition for WVU's two national qualifiers. The top-10 finishers from the preliminaries qualified for Saturday's women's mile final, including the top four from each of the event's two heats, as well as the next two fastest times.
Cashin is joined by redshirt junior Madelin Gardner at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Gardner qualified for the women's pole vault, which is scheduled for Saturday at 5 p.m.
Gardner, who was named the Mid-Atlantic Region Women's Indoor Field Athlete of the Year by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Monday, set the school's indoor pole vault record four times this season. The Williamstown, West Virginia, native earned a season-best mark of 4.37 meters (14 feet, 4 inches) at the Akron Invitational on Feb. 3.
ESPN3 will provide a live stream of the championship meet. Coverage of Saturday's action is set to begin at 5 p.m. A re-air of the championship will take place on Sunday, March 11, at 7 p.m. on ESPN2. Live stats for the event are available at NCAA.com.
