WVU Begins Two-Meet Weekend

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University track and field team began competition at the Raleigh Relays in Raleigh, North Carolina, and the Stanford Invitational in Stanford, California, on Friday.

The Mountaineers combined to earn four top-10 finishes to open the two-day competition at NC State's Paul Derr Track & Field Facility, as redshirt freshman Kyrielle Williams led the way with a third-place finish in the women's high jump.
Williams earned a mark of 1.65 meters (5 feet, 5 inches) in the event, ahead of redshirt senior Meghan Jean-Baptiste, who took 10th place with a mark of 1.60 meters (5 feet, 3 inches). Jean-Baptiste also placed fifth in the women's 100-meter hurdles on Friday, registering a time of 14.53. In her third event of the day, the Fairfax, Virginia, native finished in 11th place in the women's long jump (5.48 meters – 17 feet, 11.75 inches).
Later on, junior Faith Penny made her 2017-18 debut in the women's high jump invitational. The East Islip, New York, native finished in seventh place with a mark of 1.65 meters (5 feet, 5 inches).
Junior Danique Bryan and freshman McKenna Smith also competed for West Virginia at the Raleigh Relays on Friday. Bryan finished in 16th place in the long jump with a mark of 5.35 meters (17 feet, 6.75 inches), while Smith took 32nd place in the women's 100 meters in 12.41.
Out west, redshirt freshman Sarah Wills placed eighth in the women's 5,000 meters (section 4) in a time of 17:03.80 at Stanford's Cobb Track and Angell Field. Additionally, redshirt sophomore Candace Jones tallied an 11th-place finish in the women's 1,500 meters (section 5) in Stanford on Friday, crossing the finish line in 4:33.48.
WVU continues competition at the Stanford Invitational throughout the evening on Friday.
