– Senior forward
Teana Muldrow scored a career-high 33 points to guide the West Virginia University women's basketball team to a 76-62 win over St. John's in the Postseason WNIT Quarterfinals, at the WVU Coliseum, on Sunday.
Muldrow went 9-of-12 from the field to go along with a 14-of-15 effort from the free-throw line in the Mountaineer victory. The East Orange, New Jersey, native also added seven rebounds. Muldrow's offensive explosion was good for the most points scored by a Mountaineer this season, and it also marked a new program single-game best in the WNIT.
The Mountaineers (25-11) finished with three players in double figures, as they grabbed the lead for good late in the first quarter.
"Teana stepped up," WVU coach
Mike Carey said. "They were switching one through five, so we kept going into Teana, and that was ideal. When they switch one through five, she's going against a guard in there, but she really stepped up."
The two teams traded baskets throughout the early portion of the first quarter, with St. John's (19-15) leading by as many as four at 17-13. Then, freshman guard
Ashley Jones found junior guard/forward
Naomi Davenport on a fast break to cut the deficit to two with 1:05 to play in the opening quarter. From there, senior guard
Chania Ray hit a 3-pointer, giving the Mountaineers an 18-17 lead after 10 minutes.
Davenport and Muldrow combined for 12 of WVU's 18 first-quarter points, as the Mountaineers closed the period on a mini 8-3 run.
In the second quarter with WVU clinging to a 24-21 advantage, junior guard
Katrina Pardee swished a 3, extending the lead to six with 7:08 to play before halftime. Later on, Ray showcased her ball-handling skills, weaving through the Red Storm defense before dishing off to Davenport on the low block for an easy lay-in. That made it 31-23 WVU with 4:19 to play in the first half.
WVU went up double figures after another triple by Pardee, as St. John's struggled to find points. The Red Storm shot just 5-of-19 as a team in the second quarter, allowing West Virginia to hold a 20-11 edge in the frame.
The Mountaineers led, 38-28, at the break.
In the second half, the Mountaineers bumped their lead to 47-31 when they combined a made jumper by Pardee with a 3 by Ray. Then, Pardee hit another 3-pointer, giving WVU a 52-35 lead, it's largest of the contest.
Muldrow took it upon herself to close the frame, cashing in on a three-point play before burying a trey to allow WVU to take a 60-43 lead into the fourth quarter.
Still, St. John's wouldn't go away easily. The Red Storm cut their deficit to 11 at 64-53 with 6:27 to go. That's when the Mountaineers responded with a 7-0 run to put the game out of reach, highlighted by a no-look pass from Ray to Muldrow.
Along with Muldrow's record-setting day, Pardee added 15 points, including three made 3-pointers, four rebounds and four assists in the win. Davenport chipped in with 12 points and five rebounds, while Ray finished with eight points, five rebounds and eight assists.
WVU finished 26-of-51 (51%) from the field in the win. The Mountaineers also went 18-of-22 from the charity stripe. St. John's, which was led by Akina Wellere's 23 points, shot 23-of-61 for the game. The Red Storm held a slim rebounding advantage (34-33) but finished with 15 turnovers.
With the win, the Mountaineers advance on to Wednesday's Postseason WNIT Semifinals. West Virginia is set to host Virginia Tech in a 7 p.m. tipoff at the WVU Coliseum.
