WVU Opens Spring at Cooper Sprints
March 23, 2018 02:02 PM | Rowing
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rowing team embarks on its 2018 spring season at the Cooper Sprints on Sunday, March 25, in Cherry Hill, New Jersey.
The event is hosted by Bucknell, featuring Boston College, Drexel, UMass, North Carolina and Rhode Island. Sunday's competition also marks the first race of the season for Bucknell, UMass, Navy and Rhode Island.
"Spring racing season is finally here, although it hasn't felt very spring like yet," WVU coach Jimmy King said. "We're behind where we should be regarding our on-water development because of limited water time due to weather, but that's the case for some of the other schools too. The blade work and timing in our crews certainly won't be where we want for our first race of the season, but none of that should affect how we go about competing which will be the main point by which we gauge Sunday's performances."
The Mountaineers will compete in four events throughout the day, starting with heat one of the varsity eight at 7:30 a.m. Heat two of the varsity eight will launch at 7:40 a.m. The top five times in each heat will advance to the Grand Final, while the next three times will compete in the Petite Final.
The second varsity eight races will begin at 7:50 a.m., with the second heat slated to launch ten minutes later. Similar to the first varsity eight race, the top five times will advance to the Grand Final, with the next three times advancing to the Petite Final.
The varsity four boats will begin at 8:10 a.m., followed by heat two at 8:20 a.m. The top four boats will advance to the Grand Final, with the next three competing in the Petite Final. The third varsity boat is slated to launch at 8:40 a.m., with the boats competing for lanes in the event finals.
The final races will begin at 9:30 a.m. with the varsity eight Petite Final. The final races will run every ten minutes until the third varsity eight final at 10:40 a.m.
An official event schedule with heat assignments will be made available on Regattaworks.com on Saturday afternoon.
For fans wanting to attend the race, spectator parking will be available primarily along North Park Drive and Park Boulevard in Cherry Hill.
The Mountaineers have not competed since the novice squad raced at the Head of Occoquan on Nov. 4. The varsity squad has not raced since it hosted Robert Morris on the Monongahela River in Morgantown on Oct. 21.
Final results will be available at Regattaworks.com after each race.
