MORGANTOWN, W.Va.  – Junior Max Sear and sophomore Etienne Papineau sit in the top 10 as the West Virginia golf team finished the first round of play in fifth place at the Furman Intercollegiate at the Furman University Golf Course in Greenville, South Carolina, on Friday.

WVU shot two over par with a team score of 290. No. 28 North Florida shot 10 under with a 278, while USC Aiken finished five under to sit in second with a 283. Yale is third at even par with a score of 288.

"It was a solid opening round for the guys," coach Sean Covich said. "I like what I saw out of them today. We didn't play perfect golf but had a really positive mindset and kept our focus on the next shot. The rest of the weekend looks to be cold and possible rain, so we will have to compete in challenging conditions next few days. We will have to keep a positive attitude especially in those conditions."

Sear used a pair of birdies and an eagle to shoot one-under par with a 71, while Papineau birdied a pair on the front nine and added two more on the back nine to also finish one under. They two are tied for 10th place overall.

Junior Tristan Nicholls birdied four holes, but bogeyed four as well to end the day at even par. He is tied for 21st place with a score of 72.

Freshman Mark Goetz also carded four birdies, but had three bogeys and a quadruple bogey on No. 18 to cap the round at four over. He is tied for 61st with a 76. Fellow freshman Matthew Sharpstene sits in 83rd place with a 78 for six-over par.

The Mountaineers are paired with Furman and Dartmouth for the second round and will tee off of hole No. 1 starting at 9:20 a.m. on Saturday.
