MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Posting the lowest round of the day, the West Virginia golf team moved into second place after the second round of play at the Furman Intercollegiate on Saturday at the Furman University Golf Course in Greenville, South Carolina.
Due to storms in the area, several golfers did not finish the second round. Those players will complete the final holes Sunday morning before the third round.
The Mountaineers shot a 283 to finish five under on the day, moving to three under overall. They sit in second place with a score of 290-283=573. They are 10 strokes back from No. 28 North Florida, who leads the field at 13 under par with a score 278-285=563. USC Aiken is in third at one-over par (577), followed by Yale at two over (578).
"Another solid round out of the guys today," coach Sean Covich said. "I'm really proud of their mindset and staying positive out there. The conditions will be very challenging tomorrow with high winds, cool temperatures and rain. We need to embrace the conditions tomorrow and finish this tournament strong."
Sophomore Etienne Papineau and junior Max Sear remain inside the top 10. Papineau tallied five birdies, including three on the back nine, to shoot three under with a 69. He moved into a tie for fourth place with a score of 71-69=140. Sear birdied three on the front nine and added two more on the back nine to shoot two under.
