
Finfrock's Victory Highlights Outdoor Opener

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University track and field team opened the 2018 outdoor season at the 49er Classic in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Friday.

Senior Sara Finfrock won the women's pole vault to highlight the opening night of the two-day competition at UNC Charlotte's Irwin Belk Track & Field Center. The Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, native earned a first-place mark of 3.90 meters (12 feet, 9.5 inches) in the event.
The Mountaineers finished with three top-10 performances on the day.
Along with Finfrock, senior Rebekah Lafata tied for fourth place in the pole vault with a mark of 3.50 meters (11 feet, 5.75 inches). Freshman Ellie Gardner also tallied a mark of 3.50 meters, finishing in 13th place due to tiebreaker procedures.
On the track, freshman McKenna Smith recorded a 57.02 in the women's 400 meters, good for a 10th-place finish. Additionally, senior Meghan Jean-Baptiste (15.40) competed in the women's 100-meter hurdles, while freshman Michaela Ashford (13.14) participated in the women's 100-meter dash. Redshirt sophomore Candace Jones (1:00.44) joined Smith in the 400 meters.
The Mountaineers are one of 89 schools/teams competing at the 49er Classic this weekend. In all, the meet's women's events feature a total of over 2,000 participating athletes.
WVU concludes the outdoor season-opening meet on Saturday, with events set to begin at 10 a.m. ET. FloSports will provide live video coverage of the action at FloTrack.org. Live stats also are available at flashresults.com.
