"With a quick turnaround from last week's NCAA Indoor Championships, we are on the road to get outdoor season started," WVU coach Sean Cleary said. "This week has been good for the team as they had a chance to rest and relax from the daily grind of studying and training. As we near the end of spring break, we want to go down to North Carolina and take advantage of a low key, yet competitive opener."
The Mountaineers are coming off an indoor season that saw two student-athletes earn All-America Second Team honors at the 2018 NCAA Indoor Championships in College Station, Texas, from March 9-10. Redshirt senior Amy Cashin placed ninth in the women's mile at the national meet, crossing the finish line in 4:43.67. Redshirt junior Madelin Gardner also competed at NCAAs, finishing in ninth place in the women's pole vault with a mark of 4.31 meters (14 feet, 1.75 inches).
Gardner, who set the program's indoor school record in the pole vault four times during the indoor campaign, was named the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Mid-Atlantic Region Women's Indoor Field Athlete of the Year on March 7.
WVU also earned six All-Big 12 honors in three events at the Big 12 Indoor Championships, from February 23-24, in Ames, Iowa.
This weekend marks the second consecutive season in which the Mountaineers will compete at the 49er Classic. The team earned three individual victories at last year's event, including junior Danique Bryan in the women's long jump (6.01 meters), Gardner in the pole vault (3.90 meters) and senior Shamoya McNeil in the women's triple jump (12.78 meters).
WVU's outdoor roster features 21 returnees and seven newcomers. The Mountaineers return five regional qualifiers from a year ago, as well as two NCAA qualifiers in Cashin (3,000-meter steeplechase) and McNeil (triple jump).
The 49er Classic marks the first of seven regular-season meets for the Mountaineers this spring.
