MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Redshirt senior Amy Cashin and redshirt junior Madelin Gardner of the West Virginia University track and field team earned ninth-place finishes at the 2018 NCAA Division I Indoor Championships, at the Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium, in College Station, Texas, on Saturday.

Cashin placed ninth in the women's mile, while Gardner took ninth place in the women's pole vault. With their performances, the two Mountaineers earned All-America Second Team honors.
"The goal for every athlete at this meet is to make the podium," WVU coach Sean Cleary said. "We felt like we needed to have an absolutely perfect meet to do so. To see Maddie and Amy come as close to perfect as what we needed is bittersweet. The No. 9 position shows they came to these championships and competed exceptionally well. They'll return with All-American accolades and should have very big goals for the outdoor season."
Cashin posted a ninth-place time of 4:43.67 in the finals of the 1-mile run to begin the night for WVU's two national qualifiers. The Werribee, Victoria, Australia, native qualified with the sixth-fastest overall time in Friday's prelims, finishing in 4:40.15.
Cashin concludes a winter that saw her post the indoor season's best mile time in the Big 12 Conference and second-best in the Mid-Atlantic Region at 4:36.89 (converted) from the UCS Invitational on Feb. 17.
She also recorded a time of 9:11.24 in the women's 3,000 meters at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational on Feb. 9, which sits just behind former NCAA champion Megan Metcalfe (8:58.17) as the best in school history. The NCAA Indoor Championships was the second national meet of Cashin's collegiate career. She also competed in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2017 NCAA Division I Outdoor Championships last June.
Gardner, the USTFCCCA's Mid-Atlantic Region Indoor Field Athlete of the Year, registered a ninth-place finish in the pole vault completion, earning a mark of 4.31 meters (14 feet, 1.75 inches). The Williamstown, West Virginia, native also cleared marks of 4.11 meters and 4.21 meters during the event.
Gardner, who competed in her first national meet of her collegiate career this weekend, set the school's indoor pole vault record four times throughout the 2017-18 indoor season. Her season-best jump of 4.37 meters (14 feet, 4 inches) came at the Akron Invitational on Feb. 3 and ranked No. 1 in the Mid-Atlantic Region and No. 2 in the Big 12 this winter.
With the indoor season now complete, the Mountaineers are set to open the 2018 outdoor campaign at the 49er Classic in Charlotte, North Carolina, from March 15-17.
