Box Score KANSAS CITY - Kansas used some torrid second-half shooting to claim its 11
th Big 12 Championship tonight at the Sprint Center in Kansas City.
Â
The Jayhawks went on a 17-3 run over a seven-minute stretch to overcome a seven-point deficit and defeat the Mountaineers, 81-70.
Â
Kansas (27-7) played only seven players, but it got significant contributions from five of them while the bulk of West Virginia's scoring came from only three players - Daxter Miles Jr,
Jevon Carter and
Sagaba Konate.
Â
Tournament MVP Malik Newman continued his sizzling Sprint Center shooting by hitting 6 of 8 from behind the arc and finishing with 20 points.
Â
Nine of Devonte' Graham's 18 points came from behind the arc; Svi Mykhailiuk got 12 of his 16 from 3-point land and Lagerald Vick hit two 3s and finished with 10.
Â
In all, Kansas got 15 of its 27 triples to go down, including a blistering 69.2 percent in the second half, with its 7-foot center Udoka Azubuike sitting out the tournament with a knee injury.
Â
West Virginia (24-10) was matching the Jayhawks shot-for-shot for the first 30 minutes of the game until it ran out of ammo.
Â
The game turned with 9:16 remaining when Vick answered Konate's jumper with a big 3 from the left side. A Silvio De Sousa alley oop dunk made it a two-point game and Graham then tied it on a jumper.
Â
Newman's 3 capped a 10-0 run to give the Jayhawks a 66-63 advantage. Miles ended the drought by hitting a 3 to tie it, but Kansas made another quick, 7-0 run to take control of the game.
Â
Miles Jr. scored 25, Konate had 18 and Carter contributed 17 for the Mountaineers, who fell in the Big 12 Championship game for the third straight year.
Â
Last season, the Mountaineers were outgunned by Iowa State and two years ago, it was the Jayhawks pulling away in the second half in similar fashion.
Â
The first half saw six lead changes and four ties. Kansas' biggest lead was 20-14, following a pair of Mykhailiuk 3s. The Mountaineers answered with a 12-1 run to build their biggest first-half advantage at 29-24, which was keyed by Konate and Carter.
Â
Konate scored six straight points on short jumpers and jump hooks near the basket;
Teddy Allen gave WVU a boost off the bench with a couple of free throws and a layup, and Carter got five straight points on two free throws and a step-back 3.
Â
However, on West Virginia's next offensive possession, Konate picked up his second foul on a moving screen just ahead of the under-four timeout and went to the bench.
Â
With Konate out of the game, De Sousa was able to score a couple of close ones, and Newman's wide open 3 from the corner tied the game at 31 with 1:13 to go.
Â
Carter unknotted the score after Graham dared him to take a 3 from the top of the key, and the Mountaineers had a chance to add to their lead when Newman's bad pass sailed out of bounds with 41 seconds left.
Â
Huggins brought Konate back in with two fouls, but his jumper with 27 seconds left failed to draw iron. Allen secured the rebound and got the ball out to Carter, but he missed a hurried 3 that led to an alley oop dunk by De Sousa.
Â
Three players (Carter, Konate and Miles) scored 28 of West Virginia's 34 first-half points.
Â
De Sousa, Mykhailiuk and Newman produced 28 of Kansas' 33 first-half points.
Carter and Miles Jr. made the all-tournament team for West Virginia, while Graham was picked for the team along with Newman.
Â
West Virginia will now await its NCAA Tournament opponent and seeding when the field is announced tomorrow evening.
