
Three Wins Kickstart WVU’s Two-Meet Weekend

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University track and field team began competition at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational in Boston, Massachusetts, and the Chipotle Marshall Invitational in Huntington, West Virginia, on Friday.

The Mountaineers earned victories at both meets, highlighted by redshirt senior Amy Cashin's performance in the women's 3,000 meters at the Boston University Track and Tennis Center. Cashin finished first in a field of 141 runners with a career-best time of 9:11.24, the second-fastest time in indoor program history in the event.
WVU also collected a pair of wins on the opening night of the two-day competition at Marshall's Jeff Small Track at Cline Athletic Complex. WVU won the women's distance medley relay, as redshirt freshman Antigone Archer, redshirt senior Rebecca Wendt and freshmen McKenna Smith and Marianne Abdalah combined to finish first in 12:18.57, while redshirt junior Madelin Gardner took the win in the women's pole vault.
The Williamstown, West Virginia, native earned a track-record mark of 4.25 meters (13 feet, 11.25 inches) in the victory. Gardner, the indoor school-record holder in the pole vault, led a 1-2-3 finish for Mountaineer vaulters. Senior Sara Finfrock earned an indoor career-best mark of 4.05 meters (13 feet, 3.50 inches) for second place, while freshman Ellie Gardner registered a jump of 3.75 meters (12 feet, 3.50 inches) for third. Freshman Mikayla Shute finished fifth with a mark of 3.60 meters (11 feet, 9.75 inches).
Additionally, redshirt senior Maggie Drazba (16:34.48) finished fifth in the women's 5,000 meters in Boston, while redshirt freshman Sarah Wills (17:04.57) placed 11th in the same event. Redshirt sophomore Candace Jones competed in the women's mile, finishing in 29th place in 4:51.86.
Cashin, Drazba, Jones and Wills were among more than 90 total teams in Boston, while the Mountaineers are one of 12 teams competing this weekend in Marshall, along with Belmont, Eastern Kentucky, Fort Wayne, Marshall, Morehead State, Northern Kentucky, Ohio, SIU-Edwardsville, UNC-Asheville, Wright State and Winthrop.
WVU concludes the Marshall Invitational on Saturday, with events set to begin at 10 a.m. ET. Live results for the event can be found here.
