MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Highlighted by six competitions over five weekends, West Virginia University Director of Athletics Shane Lyons has unveiled the rowing schedule for the 2018 season.
"We've already had a few rows on the Mon' river during February which is exciting, but it also signifies that the spring racing season is drawing near," coach Jimmy King said. "We have a lot of work to do on and off the water before that first race and with some travel to new sites and competition against new competitors ahead, we're excited for what's ahead!"
West Virginia opens the spring season in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, at the inaugural Cooper Sprints on Sunday, March 25. The Mountaineers face host Bucknell, Boston College, Drexel, UMass, North Carolina and Rhode Island in the event.
Following a two-week hiatus, the Mountaineers travel to Norfolk, Virginia, for the second annual Big 12 Duals on April 7. The Mountaineers race against Oklahoma and 2017 Big 12 champion Texas. The duals will be hosted by Big 12 Conference affiliate Old Dominion and will take place at Lakewood Park.
On April 8, WVU will stay in Norfolk, Virginia, to take on Old Dominion in an exhibition at Lakewood Park.
The Mountaineers will then compete at the George Mason Invitational for the second consecutive year on April 22. The event is a unique competition where three conferences (Big 12, Colonial Athletic Conference and Atlantic 10) compete for bragging rights. Each conference will compete against each other for points against one another instead of the individual schools. WVU will be joined by Big 12 foes Kansas and Old Dominion. Delaware, Eastern Michigan, and CAA affiliate Villanova will represent the Colonial, while host George Mason, George Washington and St. Joseph's will participate for the Atlantic 10.
Six days after the George Mason Invite, WVU closes its regular season in Philadelphia, at Fairmount Park, on April 28. The race is hosted by St. Joseph's and also will feature Delaware and Navy.
West Virginia then heads to Oak Ridge, Tennessee, for the fourth time in the last two years on May 12-13 to begin postseason competition at the Big 12 Championships. The winner will claim the league's automatic bid to the 2017 NCAA Rowing Championship. Texas has won the conference championship in six of the last eight years.
