MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Redshirt senior Amy Cashin of the West Virginia University track and field team has been named the Big 12 Track and Field Female Athlete of the Week, the conference announced on Wednesday.
Cashin won the women's mile at the UCS Invitational on Feb. 17, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The Werribee, Victoria, Australia, native secured a time of 4:36.89 (converted) in the event, taking down a competitive field of 39 runners.
Her performance marks the fastest indoor time in the Big 12 Conference this season. It also ranks second in the Mid-Atlantic Regional and No. 14 nationally.
"Amy has had a wonderful season, both in training and in competition," WVU coach Sean Cleary said. "She and her teammates have really turned in some great workouts. It's nice to see this hard work paying off in her results."
The weekly conference honor is Cashin's second this indoor track and field season. She also was named the Big 12 Female Track and Field Athlete of the Week on Jan. 24, becoming the first Big 12 weekly award winner (indoor or outdoor) since the Mountaineers joined the conference in 2012-13.
The honor is Cashin's third total Big 12 distinction this school year. She previously was named the conference's cross country Female Runner of the Week on Sept. 12, 2017.
WVU travels to the Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championship from Feb. 23-24, in Ames, Iowa. The two-day championship meet is scheduled to begin on Friday at 11 a.m. ET, at the Lied Recreation Athletics Center. Saturday's events are set to commence at noon.
