MORGANTOWN, W.Va. –
Kirah Koshinski and
Zaakira Muhammad of the West Virginia University gymnastics team are nationally ranked on vault in this week's Road to Nationals Rankings.
Koshinski, a junior and native of Berwick, Pennsylvania, moved up four spots this week and sits at No. 14 with a 9.871 season average. Muhammad, a senior and native of Pennsauken, New Jersey, ranks No. 48 with a 9.84 average.
The Mountaineers (5-6, 0-2) sit at No. 31 nationally with a 195.117 team average. WVU ranks as high as No. 26 on vault (48.921 avg.). The Mountaineers also rank No. 31 on balance beam (48.671 avg.), No. 34 on uneven bars (48.667 avg.) and No. 36 on floor exercise (48.858 avg.).
Regionally, WVU ranks No. 5 in the Southeast. The Mountaineers rank No. 4 on beam, No. 5 overall and on vault and No. 6 on bars and floor.
Koshinski is regionally ranked No. 3 on vault. She also is the lone Mountaineer ranked on floor and sits at No. 15 (9.821 avg.).
Muhammad follows Koshinski in the vault rankings at No. 8. She also ranks a team-best No. 13 on bars (9.79 avg.) and sits at No. 17 in the all-around (38.783 avg.) and No. 24 on beam (9.725 avg.).
Junior
Carly Galpin paces the team on beam and ranks No. 15 regionally with a 9.754 average. Sophomore
Erica Fontaine ranks No. 17 (9.75 avg.), and freshman
McKenna Linnen ranks No. 19 (9.742 avg.).
Sophomore
Abby Kaufman ranks No. 16 in the all-around with a 38.95 average.
The Mountaineers rank No. 4 overall in the Big 12 Conference and on each event.
Koshinski ranks No. 5 in the Big 12 on vault. Kaufman ranks No. 8 in the all-around, and Muhammad ranks No. 9 on bars and No. 10 in the all-around.
Oklahoma shows a season average of 197.88 and continues to rank No. 1 nationally. UCLA ranks No. 2 with a 197.346 average, and Utah follows at No. 3 with a 197.292 average. LSU (197.267 avg.) and Florida (197.125 avg.) rank No. 4 and No. 5, respectively.
Michigan sits at No. 6 (196.563 avg.), and Alabama follows at No. 7 (196.475 avg.). Arkansas ranks No. 8 (196.383 avg.), and Kentucky (196.321 avg.) and Denver (196.296 avg.) round out the top 10.
The Mountaineers return to the WVU Coliseum on Sunday, Feb. 18, for the always popular Beauty and the Beast Meet, set to start at 2 p.m. The team will compete against Pitt and Maryland, while the Mountaineer wrestling team will square off against Clarion simultaneously. It is the home season finale for both programs, and the senior gymnasts and wrestlers will be honored following the competition.
The Mountaineer Fan Festival will be held Sunday prior to the start of competition. The Coliseum Gold Gate will open at 12:30 p.m., and one ticket grants fans admittance into both events.
