Mountaineers Cap Day One in Florida

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team wrapped up day one of the Florida State All-Conference Showdown on Friday evening in Tallahassee, Florida.
 
In Friday's tournament opener, WVU competed against Florida, Middle Tennessee State, Southern Miss, McNeese State, Central Florida, Tulane, East Tennessee State, Troy, Furman and Clemson.
 
"It was a tough day at the office," WVU coach Miha Lisac said. "We will find out how well we can respond to some adversity going into tomorrow's matches."
 
Doubles Recap
WVU began tournament-opening action in doubles play. Freshman Anastasiia Bovolskaia and junior Sofia Duran paired up for the first time this fall to square off against Florida's Marlee Zein and Tsveta Dimitrova and Central Florida's Valentina Martin and Sara Culbertson. After dropping their first match, 2-6, to Zein and Dimitrova, Bovolskaia and Duran bounced back to defeat Martin and Culbertson, 6-2.
 
After missing the last two tournaments, senior Paula Goetz made her return, as she paired with sophomore Giovanna Caputo to face off against Middle Tennessee State's Luisa Zirilli and Kim Kermet and Tulane's Daniela La Fuente and Ivone Alvaro. Goetz and Caputo dropped both of their matches on the day by a score of 1-6.
 
Additionally, junior Christina Jordan and sophomore Anne-Sophie Courteau paired up for the sixth time this fall season to take on Southern Miss' Arina Amaning and Tjasa Jerse and East Tennessee State's Andrea Pascual-Larrinaga and Esther Guemes. Jordan and Courteau fell to Amaning and Jerse, 2-6, and Pascual-Larrinaga and Guemes, 3-6.
 
Seniors Abigail Rosiello and Kirsten White closed Friday's doubles action for the Mountaineers. The senior duo bested McNeese State's Stella Carra and Charlotte Ziegler, 6-4, in their first match, but fell to Troy's Maria Casas Blas and Pei Ju Hsieh, 1-6, in their second match.

Singles Recap
After moving indoors due to lightning in the area, WVU closed Friday's tournament action in singles play.
 
Caputo kicked off singles action for the Mountaineers, when she squared off against Tulane's Adelaide Lavery. Caputo retired early after dropping the first set to Lavery, 0-6.
 
Additionally, Jordan and Duran both fell in two sets in the opening round of singles play. Jordan dropped her match to Central Florida's Sara Culbertson, 2-6, 1-6, while Duran fell to East Tennessee State's Alejandra Morales, 3-6, 1-6.
 
Bovolskaia fell to Clemson's Sydney Riley, 4-6, 3-6, while Goetz was bested by McNeese State's Marija Mastilovic, 4-6, 3-6.
 
Courteau dropped her first singles match of the weekend in a three-set, super tiebreaker to Furman's Julia Adams, 5-7, 6-4, 3-10. Also playing in a tiebreaker, Rosiello fell to Troy's Celia Montero Estevan, 1-6, 6-7 (1-7).
 
White closed out singles play for WVU on Friday evening, falling to East Tennessee State's Esther Guemes, 1-6, 2-6.
