UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The West Virginia University cross country team earned a sixth-place team finish at the 2018 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional in University Park, Pennsylvania, on Friday.
On a cold and rainy afternoon, freshman Charlotte Wood led WVU with a 33rd-place finish. The Bracebridge, Ontario, native crossed Penn State's Blue-White Golf Courses (6k) finish line in 21:54, ahead of redshirt junior Olivia Hill, who finished 39th in 22:08.
Redshirt junior Candace Jones was next for the Mountaineers, finishing 45th in 22:11, while freshman Hannah Lipps placed 48th in 22:18. Redshirt sophomore Sarah Wills also scored for West Virginia, earning a 52nd-place finish in 22:20.
Sophomores Hayley Jackson (22:25) and Bree Warren (22:29) also represented WVU at the meet.
The Mountaineers earned 217 points as a team. No. 8 Villanova won the meet with 33 points, while Princeton finished second with 64. No. 13 Penn State (91), Temple (158) and Penn (171) rounded out the top five.
"With conditions like this, I think any region that had to run in this would have results that were all over the place," WVU coach Sean Cleary said. "We're leaving a little disappointed in this performance, but it's an NCAA Championship. Coming into the season, I think we would've taken sixth place. So, it's a little bittersweet, but I'm still very happy with some of the performances. We had some kids running really, really hard in some extreme conditions.
"I'm still very proud of this team. They didn't miss an inch in training in terms of dedication, sacrifice; they were awesome. They just fell a little short in the mud today, and we'll learn from it."
Friday's race featured 30 teams and 205 total runners. It also marked WVU's 12th appearance at Penn State since 2014, including its third this season.
The performance was the team's best at the regional meet since finishing fourth at Penn State in 2016. The team finished seventh at the Mid-Atlantic Regional in 2017, in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
The Mountaineers finish the 2018 campaign with their second consecutive fourth-place finish from the Big 12 Championship on Oct. 26, including their ninth All-Big 12 selection in seven years in Jackson, who finished eighth overall at the conference meet. WVU also won multiple meets (Charlotte Opener, Lock Haven Invitational) for the first time since 2011.
