November 30, 2018 12:05 PM | Track & Field
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University Director of Athletics Shane Lyons released the 2018-19 indoor track and field schedule on Friday.
The season-opening Marty Pushkin Track Classic, the Mountaineers' lone home meet of the winter, is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 11, at the WVU Shell Building, and highlights WVU's indoor campaign. The schedule consists of seven regular-season meets leading up to the Big 12 and NCAA Indoor Championships.
"We again set up the indoor schedule with the goal of preparing for the championship season," WVU coach Sean Cleary said. "Our team has plenty of experience at a lot of the meets we'll be traveling to, so many of the girls will know what to expect, be aware of the competition and be prepared to be successful. We're fortunate to live in an area with so many top-class facilities around us to visit, and we're excited to get going."
Following the season-opening meet at home, the Mountaineers are set to travel to the YSU College Invite, in Youngstown, Ohio, on Friday, Jan. 18. From there, the team will compete in its first two-day meet of the season at the PSU National Open, from Jan. 25-26, in University Park, Pennsylvania. The meet will mark the first of two visits to Penn State for the Mountaineers this indoor season, as the team is scheduled to make a return trip on Saturday, Feb. 16, for the Penn State Tune-Up, which will serve as the Mountaineers' regular-season finale.
WVU will split for a pair of meets from Jan. 31-Feb. 2. The team will travel to the Akron Invitational, in Akron, Ohio, while select members of the team will compete in the Bruce Lehane Invite, in Boston, Massachusetts.
On Feb. 8-9, West Virginia returns to the Buckeye State to participate in the SPIRE Division I Invitational, in Geneva, Ohio.
Texas Tech is set to host the 2019 Big 12 Indoor Championship, from Feb. 22-23, in Lubbock, Texas. The Mountaineers finished ninth at the conference meet last season. The 2019 NCAA Indoor Championships will be held from March 8-9, in Birmingham, Alabama.
Last year, WVU sent a pair of student-athletes to the national meet in College Station, Texas. Madelin Gardner earned All-America Second Team honors with her ninth-place finish in the women's pole vault, while Amy Cashin also registered All-America Second Team distinction following a ninth-place finish in the women's mile. Gardner and Cashin also went on to garner All-America honors during the 2017-18 outdoor season.
The Mountaineers welcome 19 newcomers to the team this season, while 21 members of the team, including five seniors, return for the 2018-19 campaign.
