
Novice Squad Races to Two Top-Three Finishes

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Highlighted by two top-three finishes in the novice women's 4+ race, the West Virginia University novice rowing team competed in the Head of the Occoquan regatta on Saturday in Fairfax Station, Virginia.
"We were pleased with the results from this weekend, especially looking at it from the team perspective," said assistant coach Tina Griffith. "We have a lot of depth within the team and are hoping to use that competitive edge to propel us forward for the rest of the year."
This year's Head of the Occoquan, hosted by the Occoquan Boat Club, was held at the Occoquan Reservoir. The regatta marked the first intercollegiate competition for 22 Mountaineer student-athletes, who were named to the novice squad on Sept. 13.
In the frosh novice women's 4+ race, the Mountaineers secured two top-three finishes. WVU's
'B' boat finished the race in 21:26.82 to claim second place, while 'A' boat posted a time of
21:31.12, good for third place.
The Mountaineers' 'C' boat finished the novice 4+ race in 22:07.97 to claim sixth place.
In the novice women's 8+ race, West Virginia claimed two top-10 finishes, out of 21 entries.
WVU's 'A' boat finished the race in 20:13.70 to claim fifth place, while the 'B' posted a time of
20:37.99 to finish in seventh place.

West Virginia will wrap up the fall season on Friday, Nov. 9, when they host Duquesne in Morgantown for a team scrimmage on the Monongahela River. The race marks the second meeting between the Dukes and Mountaineers this fall.
