November 03, 2018 03:47 PM | Men's Basketball
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Josh Reaves' put back with one second remaining in the game gave Penn State an 84-82 win over West Virginia in a charity exhibition men's basketball game at the WVU Coliseum on Saturday afternoon.
The game was scheduled to benefit the American Red Cross' hurricane relief efforts. The NCAA approved that an institution may use one of its possible two exhibition games against a Division I institution for the purposes of raising funds for a catastrophic event. More than $9,000 was donated by fans to the American Red Cross at the Coliseum.
Penn State jumped out to a 10-0 lead to start the game before the Mountaineers took a 19-18 lead with 8:20 remaining in the first half. The Nittany Lions led at halftime, 43-31.
"I want our guys to learn," said coach Bob Huggins. "I could have called timeouts a little bit. I should have called timeouts. I want our guys to understand that we have so many new guys that think they've arrived, and they haven't. So you have to do things right."
The Mountaineers took the lead, 77-76, with 2:35 remaining in the second half on a Sagaba Konate layup. Penn State then scored the next six points to take an 82-77 lead with 1:39 to play.
Chase Harler hit a 3 from the corner to cut the Penn State lead to two, 82-80, with 1:16 to go. The Mountaineers then forced the Nittany Lions into a shot clock violation with 38 seconds remaining.
After a WVU timeout, Esa Ahmad scored on a driving layup with 29 seconds remaining to tie the game at 82. Penn State's Lamar Stevens missed a jumper with time running out before Reaves' put back with one second remaining gave the Nittany Lions the victory.
Ahmad led the Mountaineers with a game-high 25 points to go with seven rebounds. Konate (15 points and seven rebounds), Brandon Knapper (11) and Harler (10) were the other WVU players to reach double figures.
Myles Dread (23) and Lamar Stevens (20 points and 11 rebounds) to lead the Nittany Lions.
West Virginia was without starting guard James "Beetle" Bolden, who continues to sit out with a hand injury.
The No 13-ranked Mountaineers will open the 2018-19 regular season at home on Friday, Nov. 9 against Buffalo. Tip is set for 9 p.m., and the game will be televised by ESPNU. Tickets are priced at $15 and $10 at WVUGAME.com.
