MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Freshman Charlotte Wood of the West Virginia University cross country team qualified for the Canadian Junior National Cross Country Team at the U20 Canadian National Championships in Kingston, Ontario, on Saturday.
Wood finished sixth in the women's U20 race (6k), crossing the finish line in the 21:16.3. The performance allows her to compete for Team Canada at the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) World Junior Cross Country Championships, on March 30, 2019, in Aarhus, Denmark.
"Charlotte ran a perfect race today," WVU coach Sean Cleary said. "We felt she had a shot at making the team throughout the fall but realized she needed to be running exceptionally to do so. Having the opportunity to race with the world's very best will be the experience of a lifetime for her."
Wood, a native of Bracebridge, Ontario, recently completed her first season on the Mountaineer cross country team. She won her first career race at the Charlotte Opener on Aug. 31, earning Big 12 Runner of the Week accolades in the process.
Wood also placed 19th (21:04) at the 2018 Big 12 Championship on Oct. 26, in Ames, Iowa, before she was WVU's top finisher with a 33rd-place performance (21:54) at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional on Nov. 9, in University Park, Pennsylvania.
