MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Seniors Julia Calcut and Averly Hobbs and freshman Emma Longley of the West Virginia University women's swimming and diving team qualified for the finals of the women's 1-meter dive at the Navy Diving Invitational in Annapolis, Maryland, on Friday.
Hobbs led the way with a third-place finish, claiming a score of 291.05, while Longley placed seventh with a score of 266.50. Calcut finished eighth with a 263.00.
The finals appearance was the second in as many days for Hobbs, who placed fifth on women's 3-meter on the opening day of the three-day, midseason invitational at Lejeune Hall on Thursday.
"Today's competition goes out to the ladies," WVU diving coach Michael Grapner said. "They had a phenomenal day on 1-meter. Averly was solid and consistent throughout prelims and in the finals. I'm also really proud of Emma for getting her Zones score and staying consistent in the prelims and finals, as well."
Hobbs finished third in Friday's preliminary round, while Longley and Calcut placed sixth and seventh, respectively. In all, 29 divers competed on women's 1-meter, with the top-eight scores advancing to the final.
Also, in preliminaries, freshman Camille Burt placed 13th with a score of 240.70, ahead of three more Mountaineers in senior Madelyn Woods (14th place – 238.35), sophomore Callie Smith (15th – 237.70) and junior Brook Zedar (26th – 180.30).
The Mountaineer men competed on 3-meter on Friday. Freshman Nick Cover finished ninth during preliminaries with a score of 312.00, while sophomore Caleb Keck was 11th with a score of 291.80. Redshirt freshman Jacob Cardinal Tremblay finished 12th with a 290.55 score, ahead of freshman PJ Lenz, who was 18th with a score of 252.10.
Twenty-eight divers competed on men's 3-meter on the day. The top-eight scores moved on to the event's finals later in the day.
"The men had a good learning experience today," Grapner said. "There were some missed opportunities, but it still was a good experience to learn from in terms of staying out of their heads and just diving. Tomorrow is platform day, where our divers, who don't have a home platform, can compete. They have an excellent opportunity to do well."
The Mountaineers have joined George Washington, Navy, Penn State, St. Bonaventure, UMass and Virginia in Annapolis, which also is set to host the 2019 NCAA Zone A Diving Championships, from March 11-13.
Competition at the Navy Diving Invitational concludes on Saturday with men's and women's platform diving. The action is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. ET. Live results will be available, courtesy of DiveMeets.
