MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Senior Averly Hobbs of the West Virginia University women's swimming and diving team earned a fifth-place finish on women's 3-meter at the Navy Diving Invitational in Annapolis, Maryland, on Thursday afternoon.
The Littleton, Colorado, native recorded a finals score of 292.85 to pace the Mountaineers in the first of the three-day competition at Navy's Lejeune Hall. Hobbs qualified eighth during the 3-meter preliminaries earlier in the day.
"Today was a good start toward physically and mentally preparing for the second part of the season," WVU diving coach Michael Grapner said. "I'm thrilled for Averly sneaking into the finals and making improvements once she got there. She accomplished her 3-meter Zones score and finished strong."
Hobbs was joined by six other Mountaineers on 3-meter. Freshman Camille Burt placed 10th during prelims, earning a score of 252.90. Freshman Emma Longley was next at 243.25, good for a 12th-place finish, while senior Julia Calcut finished 13th with a score of 237.60.
Senior Madelyn Woods claimed a 14th-place finish after scoring 237.05, ahead of sophomore Callie Smith (222.30) and junior Brooke Zedar (201.70), who placed 17th and 22nd, respectively.
The women's 3-meter field featured 27 divers, with the top eight scores from the preliminary round moving on to the event finals.
On the men's side, freshman PJ Lenz took ninth during the 1-meter preliminaries, earning a score of 291.90. He finished ahead of redshirt freshman Jacob Cardinal Tremblay, who placed 10th with a score of 280.20, freshman Nick Cover, who finished 12th with a score of 274.55, and sophomore Caleb Keck, who took 15th with a 258.05 score.
In all, 27 divers competed on men's 1-meter on Thursday.
"For the men, this was a good learning experience," Grapner said. "I need to remind myself they are still young and have some learning to do. Prelims were tough, and each diver needs to capitalize on opportunities to score points. Tomorrow will be a better day for the men, and I'm excited to see them come back and compete."
The Mountaineers have joined George Washington, Navy, Penn State, St. Bonaventure, UMass and Virginia at the midseason invitational in Annapolis, which also is set to host the 2019 NCAA Zone A Diving Championships, from March 11-13.
Action continues on Friday with women's 1-meter and men's 3-meter. Diving is set to begin at 12 p.m. ET. Live results are available, courtesy of DiveMeets.
