MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Fans can get their first look at the 2018-19 West Virginia University women's basketball team on Tuesday when the Mountaineers host West Liberty in an exhibition as part of Haunted Hoops, presented by Coca-Cola. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. inside the WVU Coliseum.
Dan Zangrilli and Ayana Dunning will have the radio call on the Mountaineer Sports Network from IMG on Jack-FM 100.9, as well as various affiliates across the state (click here for full list), WVUsports.com and the TuneIn Radio app. A free live stream will be available at WVUSports.com.
Admission to the contest is free. Fans are encouraged to don their costumes and are welcome to participate in Trunk-or-Treat starting at 5 p.m. in the RV lot of the WVU Coliseum. Gates will open at 5:30 p.m., with more trick-or-treating available on the Coliseum concourse at that time.
"We need to play some games, get some film on us and get ready for the season," coach Mike Carey said. "I think we can score. It's all going to come down to shot selection, us playing defense and blocking out for us to be successful."
WVU and West Liberty meet for the seventh time overall and for the first time in more than 40 years. The series started in 1974 and ended in 1976, with West Virginia claiming all six wins.
The Hilltoppers are coming off a 13-16 overall campaign in 2017-18. They were selected to finish fourth in the Mountain East Conference this season as they welcome back four starters, including NCAA Division II All-America center Marissa Brown. West Liberty coach Kyle Cooper is a former graduate assistant under Carey.
The Mountaineers are coming off a 25-win campaign in 2017-18. The team returns a pair of starters from last season in seniors Naomi Davenport and Katrina Pardee, both of whom earned Preseason All-Big 12 Honorable Mention. Guard Tynice Martin, the 2017 Big 12 Championship Most Outstanding Player and more recently a Preseason All-Big 12 Team, returns to the lineup after missing the 2017-18 season with an injury. Sophomore point guard Kysre Gondrezick joins the starting lineup after sitting out last season after transferring from Michigan. Additionally, senior center Theresa Ekhelar and sophomore guard Nia Staples also return from last season's team.
West Virginia has added six players to the roster for the 2018-19 season. Freshmen Jala Jordan, Kari Niblack and Madisen Smith are expected to see their first action on Tuesday, while classmate Rochelle Norris remains out with an injury. Junior guard Lucky Rudd joined the team last winter out of NC State and will be eligible in mid-December, while junior forward De'Janae Boykin, a Penn State transfer, is expected to sit out the 2018-19 season.
West Virginia officially opens the season on Tuesday, Nov. 6, against Coppin State in a 7 p.m. tip at the Coliseum.
