MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 2-ranked West Virginia University rifle team returns to the road this weekend for a pair of matches at Army West Point's Tronsrue Marksmanship Center in West Point, New York.
The Mountaineers (6-0, 3-0 GARC) shoot their third Great America Rifle Conference (GARC) match of the season against the host Black Knights on Saturday, Oct. 27, before competing against Coast Guard on Sunday, Oct. 28. Both matches will begin at 9 a.m.
WVU ventures away from Morgantown following a 4-0 showing in two days of competition at the Bill McKenzie Rifle Range inside the WVU Coliseum. After shooting 4683 in wins over No. 6 Murray State and No. 10 Ohio State on Oct. 20, the Mountaineers shot a season-high 4712 in victories against No. 2 Air Force and No. 9 Nebraska on Oct. 21. Included in the team's showing was a season-best 2345 smallbore mark.
"Sunday's performance gives us some momentum as we move into this weekend," Mountaineer coach Jon Hammond said. "Whenever the team members shoot a season high, things begin to click. We've had a short week of practice, but there were a lot of good lessons learned last weekend that we can take with us. We want to build on the momentum and lessons and use them to generate good performances in West Point."
This weekend's matches in the Tronsrue Marksmanship Center mark the fourth different venue the Mountaineers have competed in since the season opened on Sept. 29.
"It's great for us to shoot in this many different venues this early in the year," Hammond added. "Ultimately, we want this team out of its comfort zone a bit, and that happens when you compete in a range that's different and new. It's a good challenge and great practice. This will be a good weekend for us – the team will be challenged, and we're all excited to compete in a less familiar range."
Senior Ginny Thrasher paces the team with a 596.25 air rifle season average. Junior Milica Babic follows with a 596 average.
Junior Morgan Phillips made her season debut last weekend and boasts a team-best 587.5 smallbore average, also the best mark nationally. Thrasher follows with a 585 average.
The Mountaineers are 38-10 all-time against Army West Point (2-1, 2-0 GARC). In their shoulder-to-shoulder match last season, WVU defeated the Black Knights, 4733-4640 at the WVU Rifle Range.
Sunday's meeting against the Bears is the Mountaineers' first under Hammond.
