MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University cross country team travels to Ames, Iowa, for the 2018 Big 12 Cross Country Championship on Friday, Oct. 26.
The women's 6k championship race is set to begin at 11 a.m. ET, at the ISU Cross Country Course. The top runners from all 10 Big 12 institutions will compete with the top-15 finishers from the race earning All-Big 12 honors.
For the third consecutive season, the meet will be live streamed on FloTrack.org. To access live streaming coverage of the event, replays and more, fans can sign up to become a subscriber to FloTrack online. Additionally, live results of the meet can be found at DeltaTiming.com.
"We're looking forward to having a great day tomorrow," WVU coach Sean Cleary said. "The weather will be perfect, and the team is in good spirits. I have been very proud of this team this fall, and I expect that to continue. Our hope is to take the race we ran at Penn State, which was very good, and run even better. Should we do that, we'll leave Iowa a happy group."
Iowa State serves as host for the conference meet for the first time since 2008. The Mountaineers have never competed in a cross country meet in Ames.
The No. 17 Cyclones are the lone Big 12 team represented in the most recent United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) National Coaches Poll, which was released on Oct. 16. Oklahoma State and Texas received votes in the poll.
Last year, WVU finished fourth as a team at the 2017 Big 12 Championship at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock, Texas. Maggie Drazba (sixth – 20:19.1) and Amy Cashin (13th – 20:44.0) earned All-Big 12 honors, marking the first time West Virginia finished with multiple all-conference accolades in the same season since 2014.
WVU's best finish at the Big 12 Championship came when the Mountaineers finished second as a team in 2013 and 2014. The team is seeking its third conference championship in program history and first since winning the 2007 Big East Championship. The Mountaineers also won an Atlantic 10 title in 1994.
West Virginia's last individual conference champion came when former All-American Marie-Louise Asselin finished first at the 2008 Big East Championship. In 1991, Vicki Stum won the Atlantic 10 Championship race.
The Mountaineers last competed at the Penn State National Open on Oct. 12, in University Park, Pennsylvania. WVU earned a sixth-place team finish in a field of 28 teams and 289 runners. Sophomore Hayley Jackson paced WVU with a 13th-place finish in 21:26, while redshirt junior Olivia Hill took 28th place in 21:12.
Sophomore Bree Warren (47th – 21:26), freshman Charlotte Wood (57th – 21:33) and redshirt sophomore Sarah Wills (76th – 21:42) also scored for WVU at the meet.
WVU enters the conference meet sitting at No. 4 in the USTFCCCA's Mid-Atlantic Regional rankings, which were released Oct. 15. It's the highest ranking for the team this season.
