MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University golf team returns to stroke play this week when the Mountaineers travel to Florida to join the University of Central Florida in co-hosting the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational from Sunday through Tuesday at Isleworth Golf & Country Club in Windermere.
The 2018 season marks WVU's second year teaming with UCF to host the tournament. This year's field also includes Big 12 foes No. 12 Texas and No. 55 Texas Tech, as well as No. 8 Illinois, No. 13 Vanderbilt, No. 18 Arizona State, No. 21 South Carolina, No. 22 Auburn, No. 25 LSU, No. 26 Cal, No. 48 North Texas, No. 52 Florida, No. 60 Washington and No. 115 Augusta. West Virginia enters the tournament ranked at No. 51 in Golfstat's rankings, while UCF is No. 46.
"We are excited to once again co-host the most prestigious tournament in college golf," coach Sean Covich said. "The Tavistock has long been regarded as a major championship for college golf, and with this year's field, it's no different. Isleworth will play extremely difficult this week as high winds are expected. These greens are so fast and firm, so should be a challenge for all the teams."
Tee times with start at 8 a.m. with 18 holes played each day. West Virginia is paired with Cal, who won the 2017 tournament, and South Carolina for the first day of play. The course is a par-72 that runs 7,544 yards.
Matthew Sharpstene, Max Sear, Etienne Papineau, Philipp Matlari and Logan Perkins will represent the Mountaineers at the event. All five competed in last season's event, with Sharpstene, Sear, Papineau and Matlari participating on the scoring squad while Perkins played as an individual.
Sear, who recently earned medalist honors at The Health Plan Mountaineer Invitational, led West Virginia with an 11th-place finish at the event in 2017. He finished ahead of 12 nationally ranked opponents as WVU took 16th in a loaded field. Sear currently leads the Mountaineers with a 70.17 stroke average through six rounds of stroke play. Papineau boasts a 71.00 stroke average, followed by Sharpstene at 71.50.
Additionally, Mark Goetz, Kurtis Grant and Tristan Nicholls will compete in the Muskateer Classic, hosted by Xavier, on Monday and Tuesday at Maketewah Country Club in Cincinnati, Ohio. Ball State, Bowling Green, Butler, DePaul, Indiana, IUPUI, La Salle, Miami (OH), Morehead State, Northern Kentucky, Oakland, Ohio State, St. John's and Wright State will be in attendance at the event.
