
Eight Wins Propel WVU in Martha Thorn Opener

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Highlighted by five singles wins and three doubles wins, the West Virginia University tennis team completed day one at the Martha Thorn Mountaineer Invitational in Morgantown on Friday at the Mountaineer Tennis Courts.
Singles Recap
In tournament-opening action, five Mountaineers came away victorious, beginning with sophomore Anne-Sophie Courteau. She captured West Virginia's first win of the day by defeating Akron's Luisa Echeverry in two sets, 6-0, 6-2. Fellow sophomore Giovanna Caputo defeated Cleveland State's Sian Payne, 6-1, 6-3.
Freshman Anastasiia Bovolskaia made her first appearance at the Martha Thorn Invitational, as she captured a two-set victory, 6-3, 6-4, over Cleveland State's Kateryna Avram.
Two seniors rounded out WVU's singles action on Friday with a pair of three-set victories. Senior Abigail Rosiello defeated Cleveland State's Lara Prosenjak, 5-7, 6-2, 10-7, while senior Kirsten White topped Akron's Carla Flores, 6-4, 3-6, 10-6.
Junior Christina Jordan suffered a loss in a three-set battle, 4-6, 6-3, 10-12, with Cleveland State's Gaby Schoenberg.

Friday's doubles action was highlighted by two wins from Jordan and Courteau. The Mountaineer duo led the team with two doubles wins by securing victories over Delaware's Tayo Adetunji and Caragh Courtney, 6-4, and Duquesne's Julianne Herman and Margot Pessy, 6-4.
The duo of Bovolskaia and Caputo secured the Mountaineers' eighth and final win of the day when they bested Delaware's Sarah Hall and Emily Gotkiewicz, 6-4.
