MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rowing team opened the fall season on Saturday, Oct. 13, as the squad traveled to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to scrimmage Duquesne and Robert Morris on the Allegheny River.
Each team set off from the Three Rivers Rowing Association at Washington's Landing, just outside of downtown Pittsburgh, at 9:15 a.m. Saturday morning.
"We have a lot of positive takeaways from today's scrimmage with the most significant among those being consistency of effort," said coach Jimmy King. "The coaches were pleased to see that consistency across all boats, in all flights, in all pieces. While we certainly have many technical elements to continue improving, I'm pleased with the mindset our coxswains and rowers displayed in our first competition of the fall."
The first round saw each teams' varsity eight squads competing in five paced races. After the first round's conclusion, each teams' varsity four crews launched for the second round at 11:30 a.m. and competed in four races. All paces were capped at 28 strokes per minute.
"Thanks to the Duquesne staff and team for hosting today's scrimmage," King said. "We look forward to returning the hospitality next month."
Following the completion of Saturday's scrimmage, the team will be off from competition until Saturday, Oct. 27, when they travel to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to compete in the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta.
