October 13, 2018 11:26 AM | Rifle
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 2-ranked West Virginia University rifle team opens its 2018-19 season against Memphis on Sunday, Oct. 14, at 10 a.m., at the Bill McKenzie Rifle Range inside the WVU Shell Building.
The match is free and open to the public. The teams will shoot one smallbore relay and one air rifle relay, and competition should conclude before 3 p.m.
The Mountaineers (1-0, 1-0 GARC) are coming off a two-week break after opening the 2018-19 season with a 4704-4662 victory at Akron on Sept. 29.
"I think our goal this weekend is to get more match practice," Mountaineer coach Jon Hammond said. "We want to shoot our best, and we want another measuring stick so we can see where we are at. We've had two solid weeks of practice, though we've battled a few coughs and colds. Mainly, we're excited to shoot our first home match. We want to get back on the Bill McKenzie Rifle Range. This is the start of a busy three-week stretch of matches."
WVU is 12-2 against the Tigers (1-0). Last season, the Mountaineers earned a 4730-4634 win at Memphis on Nov. 11, 2017. The squads met again at the 2018 Great America Rifle Conference (GARC) Championships in February. WVU captured the team title with a 4699 mark, while Memphis finished ninth with a 4624 total.
Against the Zips, senior Ginny Thrasher and junior Milica Babic tied for the air rifle victory with matching 597 marks. Sophomore Sarah Osborn led the way in smallbore with a winning 584 total.
WVU defeated Akron in both disciplines, winning smallbore, 2328-2312, and air rifle, 2376-2350.
The Tigers opened the season with a 4649-4648 victory over Jacksonville State at the Tiger Open on Sept. 30.
