Mountaineers Head to Big 12 Match Play
October 11, 2018 03:50 PM | Golf
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Fresh off a victory at The Health Plan Mountaineer Invitational earlier this week, the West Virginia University golf team travels to Hockley, Texas, this weekend to compete in the inaugural Big 12 Match Play Tournament from Friday through Sunday.
The Big 12 will host the event at the par-71, 7,007-yard Club at Houston Oaks. The league is the first to host its own Match Play tournament, which matches the format used to determine the NCAA men's golf national championship.
"This will be such a unique event because not only are we going to play against some of the best teams in the country, but we will also take a break from the traditional stroke play format and experience match play competition," coach Sean Covich said. "The mindset will be different in match play, whereas a big number on a hole in match play will not be nearly as detrimental as it would be in stroke play. I think our guys are excited about it; I know coach Jay (Woodward) and myself are excited to see how we respond in match play. It should be a fun weekend in Texas competing against the best teams in the country."
The first five sessions will consist of pool play, followed by a final championship round. Seeds are based on each team's Golfweek/Sagarin and Golfstat rankings.
Each squad will play four matches during pool play. Wins are worth three points, while draws are worth one. At the conclusion of pool play, each team will be ranked 1-5 within their pool based on points accrued.
Senior Max Sear, juniors Etienne Papineau and Philipp Matlari, sophomores Matthew Sharpstene, Mark Goetz and Logan Perkins and freshman Kurtis Grant will represent the Mountaineers at the event. Lineups are subject to change in between each match.
West Virginia is seeded No. 9 and in Pool A. The Mountaineers will take on defending national champion and No. 1 seed Oklahoma State at 2:30 p.m. ET on Friday. They will then take on No. 8 Texas Tech at 9 a.m. Saturday before facing No. 4 Kansas at 2:30 p.m. The Mountaineers cap pool play against No. 5 TCU on Sunday at 9 a.m.
