MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Despite a win from sophomore Mark Goetz, the West Virginia University men's golf team fell to defending National Champion and No. 1-ranked Oklahoma State, 4-1-1, to open the Big 12 Match Play Tournament on Friday at the Club at Houston Oaks in Hockley, Texas.
Goetz (1UP) earned the win over OSU's Austin Eckroat, while classmate Matthew Sharpstene (A/S) tied for the Cowboys' Zack Bauchou.
"I'm extremely proud of the guys," coach Sean Covich said. They played hard and competed with the most prestigious program in all of college golf. We won some points and took several of the matches all the way to the final hole. Either way, this was a great experience for our young program to go toe-to-toe against Oklahoma State. We look forward to getting back out there tomorrow against Texas Tech and Kansas."
Freshman Kurtis Grant fell to OSU's Viktor Hovland (3&2), while senior Max Sear fell to Hayden Wood (3&1). Sophomore Logan Perkins dropped his match to Matthew Wolff (4&2) and junior Etienne Papineau fell to Aman Gupta (2&1).
The Mountaineers have a pair of opportunities to bounce back on Saturday. WVU will tee off against Texas Tech at 9 a.m. ET before facing Kansas at 2:30 p.m. ET.
