MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Following her record-setting performance at the Youngstown State College Invitational on Jan. 19, redshirt senior Amy Cashin of the West Virginia University track and field team has been named the Big 12 track and field's Female Athlete of the Week, the conference announced on Wednesday.

Cashin won the women's 800 meters in Youngstown, breaking the Watson and Tressel Training Site (WATTS) track record in a time of 2:10.76. The performance also was a lifetime best for the Werribee, Victoria, Australia, native.
With the honor, Cashin becomes WVU's first women's track and field Big 12 weekly award winner (indoor or outdoor) since joining the conference in 2012.
"We're very pleased with the way Amy has returned from Christmas," WVU coach Sean Cleary said. "To be able to go out and equal an 800-best without any special training is a great sign for what lies ahead in the next few months for her."
Cashin broke the previous track record of 2:12.13, set by Rebecca Zaiter of Illinois-Chicago in 2015. The win marked Cashin's second of her 2017-18 indoor campaign. She also won the women's 800 meters in her indoor season debut at the WVU Open on Jan. 13.
The honor is Cashin's second Big 12 distinction this school year. She previously was named the conference's cross country runner of the week on Sept. 12, 2017.
The Mountaineers are back in action on Jan. 26-27, at the Penn State National Open, in University Park, Pennsylvania. The two-day meet begins on Friday at 5 p.m. ET, while Saturday's start time is slated for 10:30 a.m.
