WVU Finishes Sixth at Spiked Shoe Invite

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Redshirt senior Amy Cashin was the first Mountaineer to cross the finish line at the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational in University Park, Pennsylvania, on Friday, as the West Virginia University cross country team finished in sixth place.
MEET RESULTS
Cashin finished 12th overall in a time of 21:49 on Penn State's Blue-White Golf Course (6k), the first of three WVU runners to place in the top 30.
"Today was a step forward for the group," coach Sean Cleary said. "While we did not have some very key members on the line, I did think we would be a little better. As with most teams around the country, we trained quite hard this week and I suspect some were a little flat from doing so."
Redshirt sophomore Olivia Hill finished 24th in her 2017 debut, earning a time of 22:17, while redshirt freshman Sarah Wills placed 26th in a time of 22:22.
Redshirt freshman Antigone Archer (22:48) and redshirt sophomore Andrea Pettit (27:41) also competed for West Virginia on Friday. The two finished 38th and 85th, respectively.
The meet was scored in duals with the host Nittany Lions receiving all six wins for their first-place finish. Georgetown placed second with five wins, while Syracuse (four wins), Pitt (three wins) and Bucknell (two wins) rounded out the top five. West Virginia secured one win, while Edinboro had none.
"Cross country is a unique sport in that rarely does the first week of September resemble what the team looks like in November," Cleary said. "I believe we will be much improved in a month."
Friday marked the sixth consecutive season WVU has competed at the Spiked Shoe Invitational. It was also the eighth time since 2014 the Mountaineers made the trip to race at Penn State.
West Virginia will return to the course on Saturday, Sept. 30, at the Greater Louisville Classic in Louisville, Kentucky – the site of the 2017 NCAA Cross Country Championships – following a two-week break in the action.
