MORGANTOWN, W.Va. –
Following a two-week break in the schedule, the West Virginia University cross country team competes at the 16th annual Greater Louisville Classic in Louisville, Kentucky, on Saturday, Sept. 30.
MEET INFO
The Mountaineers are set to run in the Women's Gold 5k race, one of three women's collegiate races at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park this weekend. The race is scheduled to begin at 10:15 a.m. ET.
"It seems like an eternity since we last raced," WVU coach
Sean Cleary said. "We are excited to see where we are at this point of the season. The team has really been working hard, and thankfully, most of the group's health is in a good spot. We will go out, run hard and return home for another big month."
WVU is no stranger to the event as Saturday marks the fifth time since 2011 the Mountaineers will compete in Louisville. West Virginia last entered the Greater Louisville Classic in 2015, when the team earned a victory.
The meet also gives WVU a first-look at this year's NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships course. Louisville will host the national finals at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park on Saturday, Nov. 18.
WVU last competed at Penn State's Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational on Sept. 8, in University Park, Pennsylvania. The Mountaineers were led by redshirt senior
Amy Cashin, who earned a 12th-place finish in a time of 21:49. For her efforts, the Werribee, Victoria, Australia, native was recognized as the Big 12 Runner of the Week on Sept. 12.
Redshirt sophomore
Olivia Hill (24th) and redshirt freshman
Sarah Wills (26th) joined Cashin in the top 30.
The Mountaineers began the 2017 season on Sept. 1, earning a win at the Lehigh Invitational behind a first-place individual finish by redshirt senior
Maggie Drazba (20:58.55).
West Virginia is ranked No. 20 in FloTrack's FloXC Women's Team Rankings, which were released on Monday. The Mountaineers received votes in USTFCCCA's Division I National Coaches' Poll this week and were slotted fourth in the Mid-Atlantic Region in the weekly regional rankings.
