Mountaineers Appear in FloTrack Rankings

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women's cross country team was ranked No. 20 in FloTrack's 2017 FloXC Countdown, released Saturday morning.
FloTrack's rankings will be counting down the preseason top-25 teams for the upcoming cross country season through Sept. 12. It's the first time WVU has been ranked in the top 25 of a national list since 2015.
"Early-season rankings are very difficult to get right," coach Sean Cleary, who will be entering his 11th year at the helm this season, said. "While I do believe we have a very strong squad this fall, the proof will be in the results. We have a shot to be much better than expected but need a few things to fall into place. Starting at No. 20 shows we are a national-class team; maintaining and improving this number will be the goal."
The Mountaineers are coming off a 2016 season in which they finished third at the Big 12 Championship and fourth at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional.
This season, WVU will be led by a trio of redshirt seniors in Amy Cashin, Maggie Drazba and Jillian Forsey, all of whom were named All-Mid-Atlantic Region performers in 2016. Drazba and Forsey also qualified for the NCAA Cross Country Championships as individuals last fall.
West Virginia will begin the 2017 season on Friday, Sept. 1 when the Mountaineers travel to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, for the Lehigh Invitational.
