MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Senior Amy Cashin and junior Shamoya McNeil of the West Virginia University track and field team will compete at the 2017 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championship on Thursday, June 8 and Saturday, June 19, in Eugene, Oregon.
The duo will compete at the NCAA Championships for the first time in their collegiate careers. The championships will take place at Hayward Field.
“We are thrilled to have these very special student-athletes competing in what is the finest track and field meet outside of the Olympics,” coach Sean Cleary said. “This will be Shamoya and Amy's first time competing at the outdoor championships. Both prepared well and have had exceptional seasons leading into this event. Running in front of crowds in excess of 12,000 should provide an atmosphere second to none. We are excited to get this meet underway and bring home some memorable moments and first rate experience.”
Cashin will open up competition for the Mountaineers on Thursday in the women’s semifinals 3,000-meter steeplechase at 8:02 p.m. ET. Out of three heats, the top-two performers and the next best two in the event will advance to the finals on Saturday set for 6:54 p.m. ET. On Saturday, McNeil will represent WVU in the women’s triple jump finals, slated for 6:40 p.m. ET.
Fans can follow the NCAA Championships live at ncaa.com. ESPN will also provide coverage of various events during the championships.
At the NCAA East Preliminary Round on May 25-27, Cashin and McNeil punched their tickets to Eugene, in their respective events. The pair are the first to qualify for the NCAA Championships since alum Kaitlyn Gillespie in 2015.
Cashin posted a record-breaking performance in the steeplechase at the NCAA East Prelims, setting a WVU record of 10:01.19, to place sixth. The Werribee, Australia, native was the first Mountaineer to punch her ticket that weekend. Cashin bested alum Sarah Martinelli’s previous record of 10:05.27 set in 2014.
McNeil claimed her bid to the national championships, after placing 11th in the triple jump with a clearance of 13.04 meters (42’-9 ½”) at regionals. A native of Portland, Jamaica, McNeil holds the second all-time best mark in WVU outdoor history of 13.21 meters(43’-04 ¼”) set at the 2017 Big 12 Outdoor Championship.
