MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia University women’s basketball coach Mike Carey has announced the addition of guard Kysre Gondrezick on Friday. Gondrezick, a transfer, must sit out the 2017-18 season due to NCAA transfer rules.

Gondrezick, a native of Benton Harbor, Michigan, joins the program after a stellar freshman season at Michigan. She was named to the All-Big Ten Second Team (coaches and media) and to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team.

“We are thrilled to have Kysre join our Mountaineer family,” Carey said. “Kysre has the capability of playing several positions because of basketball IQ and her scoring abilities. She’s capable of making everyone around her better. Kysre’s passing abilities, along with her scoring prowess, make her a big-time threat. In addition to her athletic ability, she has a strong academic skill set, as well.  Her tremendous skills will bring our program to the next level. We are extremely happy to have Kysre as a Mountaineer.”

She led all freshmen in the Big Ten with 14.9 points per game, while averaging 3.6 rebounds in 27.8 minutes per game. Gondrezick’s 42.9 three-point percentage (75-of-175) was third and her 2.3 three-pointers per game were fifth in the Big Ten. Gondrezick reached double-figure scoring in 24 of 33 games, which included eight consecutive games from Jan. 10 to Feb. 8. She produced 492 points, 119 rebounds, 93 assists and 38 steals in 33 games.

The guard was the Big Ten Freshman of the Week six times (Nov. 14, Dec. 26, Jan. 16, Jan. 30, Feb. 6 and Feb. 27). She was tabbed the USBWA Freshman of the Week, NCAA Starting Five and Big Ten Player and Freshman of the Week following a dominant performance against Northwestern, scoring 22 points, while adding seven rebounds, six assists, and two steals (Jan. 25). Near the end of the season, Gondrezick scored 19 or more points in four consecutive games, including 25 at Penn State (Feb. 26).

Prior to Michigan, Gondrezick was a standout at Benton Harbor High. She was given the coveted Michigan Miss Basketball award, selected as Michigan Gatorade Player of the Year, Detroit Athletic Club Female Athlete of the Year and named a Parade All-American. Also, she participated in the Jordan Brand Classic game. She averaged 40.5 points per game as a senior, including scoring 72 points in a high school playoff game. She graduated as the No. 2 scorer in Michigan girls basketball history with 2,827 points. Coming out of high school, the four-time all-state honoree was rated the No. 29 recruit from Blue Star Basketball. Academically, she was salutatorian at Benton Harbor.

Gondrezick’s father, Grant, played collegiate basketball at Pepperdine and played in the NBA, while her mother, Lisa Harvey-Gondrezick, won a national title in women’s basketball at Louisiana Tech. Gondrezick’s sister, Kalabrya, plays basketball at Michigan State.

Gondrezick joins four others who signed their NLIs to join the program next season: Naomi Davenport (Cincinnati Ohio/Trinity Valley Community College), Destiny Harden (Chicago, Ill./Morgan Park), Ashley Jones (Philadelphia, Pa./Neumann and Goretti Catholic) and Makayla Stanley (Glen Allen, Va./Glen Allen).
