“When we returned from George Mason a year ago, I was pleased with how hard the kids performed in very adverse conditions,” said coach Sean Cleary. “It looks as though we have better weather this weekend and thus should return with even better performances. We enter a pause in the season where we will compete four weekends in a row. I am looking to see that we get ourselves into a situation where by we capitalize on the week prior successes.”
At last year’s Mason Spring Invite, the cold temperatures and high winds didn’t stop West Virginia as Tori Bertrand captured a victory in the women’s pole vault, marking 3.91 meters, the third best in outdoor history. Additionally, WVU collected six top-five finishes at the event.
In pole vault, Madelin Gardner finished third with a mark of 3.81 meters and Sara Finfrock placed fifth with a 3.55 meter vault.
Megan Yuan competed in the 1,500 meters, posting a third-place finish with a time of 4:40.31.
West Virginia placed fourth in the 4x400 meter relay. A team of Brianna Kerekes, Kelly Williams, Rebecca Wendt and Bria Welker crossed the finish line in 4:10.18.
WVU grabbed its sixth top-five finish in the high jump, thanks to Faith Penny, for placing fifth in with mark of 1.65 meters.
Last weekend, junior Maggie Drazba was the lone competitor for the Mountaineers at the Stanford Invitational on April 1. Drazba made her outdoor season debut, as she placed 10th in the women’s 10,000-meter run, section two, with a career-best time of 34:04.26, the sixth-best in program history. She shed 1:46.14 minutes off of her previous best, set at the 2015 Big 12 Outdoor Championship.
