WVU Ends Regular Season on the Schuylkill

MORGANTOWN, W.Va – The West Virginia University rowing team closed the 2017 regular season on Saturday by competing against Delaware and Temple on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.
WVU was able to brave adverse weather conditions to win three races over the course of the day.
"We didn't handle the wind as well as we could have, but some of that comes with experience racing in those conditions,” coach Jimmy King said. “Our young crews are starting to figure out how to make their boats go in good conditions, but they are still learning how to make changes on the fly in the middle of racing as the wind gusts. We would obviously like to earn more wins, but to do that we need to learn from each opportunity including today's racing. Considering how young our varsity eights are, they have progressed rather well this season, but there's a bit more speed to be gained in the lead-up to Big 12s."
The Mountaineers took on Delaware in the morning session of today’s race. The second varsity four boat opened the contest for West Virginia and were able to take the competition with a time of 7:57.50. The Blue Hens’ ‘A’ boat finished the race in 8:04.48, while the ‘B’ crew crossed the line at 8:14.65.
WVU (7:51.55) would fall in the third varsity eight contest when the Blue Hens crossed the finish line in 7:39.07. In the varsity four contest, the Mountaineers finished five seconds behind their counterparts, who completed the race in 8:02.98.
After a close race through the first 600 meters, WVU’s second varsity eight crew were able to will their way to finish in 7:25.19, six seconds ahead of their foes. In the final race of the morning, the first varsity eight boat crossed the line in 7:17.82, but ultimately fell to Delaware.
After a short break, WVU began the afternoon session of racing, where the Mountaineers faced Temple. WVU’s second varsity four crew finished in 8:11.46 to top Temple to start the afternoon with a win. However, the Owls would then take the remaining races in the third varsity eight, first varsity four, second varsity eight and varsity eight competitions to close the event.
“Our 3V8 continues to improve, and we're looking for one more jump in speed over the next two weeks,” King continued. “Our Varsity 4s is the group in which we expect to see the most improvement at the end of the season. They haven't been able to row together with any consistency throughout the season due to a combination of factors. As they get time together at the end of the semester they should start to jell. Among all of our training groups--the Varsity 8s, the Varsity 4s, the 3v8--the Varsity 4s probably have the biggest upside for improvement."
West Virginia will return to Morgantown to prepare for the Big 12 Championship on May 13 and 14, in Melton Lake, Tennessee. The Big 12 Championship is hosted by the Oak Ridge Rowing Association. The Mountaineers will join Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Texas and Big 12 affiliate members, Alabama, Old Dominion and Tennessee in the event.
