WVU Wins Two Races at Duquesne

MORGANTOWN, W.Va – The West Virginia University rowing team overcame adverse weather conditions to win two of the three races against Duquesne and Dayton, Saturday on the Allegheny River.
Due to increased river flow because of overnight rains, both varsity four and all novice events were cancelled because of safety concerns. Instead, the first and second varsity fours combined to make up the third varsity eight crews for each team.
The first, second and third varsity eight boats each competed for the Mountaineers and Dukes during Saturday’s competition.
“Of our three crews that raced today, I'm particularly pleased by the performance of our varsity fours group who raced as the 3V8,” coach Jimmy King said “They did a great job of racing together as one crew without any advance notice, performing when it mattered."
In the first event of the day, Dayton’s first varsity eight boat narrowly edged their WVU counterparts as they took the race with a time of 5:24.4. The Mountaineers finished the race .4 seconds behind in 5:24.8.
The remaining Mountaineer boats were able to rally to take the final two races of the day. The second varsity eight crew finished in 5:36.4, besting their competition by eight seconds. Duquesne finished second in 5:44.1, while Dayton crossed the finish line in 5:52.9
The two teams closed out Saturday’s competition with the third varsity eight race. The united WVU crew willed their way to victory as they were able to finish in open water with a time of 5:26.0.
“Our 2V8 also did a good job building upon the progress they made in the past two days working in a new lineup,” King continued. “I expect to see continued improvements as they spend more time together. As for the 1V8, they stumbled today, but most certainly not for a lack of effort. If anything, it was a bit too much misplaced effort. They'll adapt and improve.”
The Mountaineers will be back in action tomorrow, Sunday, April 22, at the George Mason Invitational. Nine teams will take part in the competition that pits the Big 12, Colonial and Atlantic 10 Conferences against one another.
WVU will join Big 12 foes Kansas and Old Dominion. Eastern Michigan, Buffalo and Delaware will represent the Colonial Athletic Conference, while host George Mason, George Washington and Dayton will compete for the Atlantic 10.
