Kansas State Wildcats

Morgantown, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team fell to Kansas State on Sunday, as the Mountaineers dropped a 4-0 decision at the Body First Indoor Tennis Center in Manhattan, Kansas.
WVU (4-9, 0-3 Big 12) opened the match by conceding the doubles point, as Kansas State was able to best the Mountaineers in two of the three contests. On the No. 1 court, K-State’s Millie Stretton and Ana Garcia Navas dropped Senior Kaja Mrgole and Christina Jordan, 6-4, to open the match. Carolina Costamagna and Ines Mesquita would then best the tandem of Habiba Shaker and Sofía Duran, 6-2, on court No. 2 to secure the doubles point for the Wildcats.
The match between the duo of Paula Goetz and Lyn Yuen Choo and Iva Bago and Livia Cirnu was tied at four apiece and was unfinished due to clinch rules.
“I thought Kansas State played a solid match today,” fourth-year coach Miha Lisac said. “They were better in executing and stayed patient with their approach in matches. We are moving on to next week’s matches against Texas and Baylor.”
Kansas State would go on to secure the first three singles of the contest to claim the 4-0 victory over the Mountaineers. Mesquita would best Goetz in two sets, 6-1 and 6-0, to give the Wildcats their first singles victory of the day at the No. 3 slot. On the first court, Shaker fell in a close first set, 7-6 (7), and Costamagna would hold on to win the second set, 6-2, to extend K-State’s team lead to 2-0.
Despite a first set victory, Mrgole lost in three sets (4-6, 6-2 and 6-2) to Stretton on the second court to clinch the match for Kansas State.
At No. 4, Jordan trailed Garcia Navas, 0-3, in the second set after dropping the first set when Stretton secured the match. The remaining matches remained unplayed due to clinch rules.
