Second Varsity Eight Propels WVU at Georgetown

MORGANTOWN, W.Va – The second varsity eight crew overcame a slow start to claim victory on Saturday as the West Virginia University rowing team continued the spring season with a dual race against Georgetown on Saturday in Washington D.C..
“While we didn't take the team-wide step forward we wanted to see, we did see progress and gained some valuable insight that we'll begin to apply next week,” coach Jimmy King said “We'll take more positives than negatives from today because we identified areas where we can find more speed."
The second varsity eights overcame a slow start to even the race at the 500 meter mark. The crew, made up of Lillian Westerman, Alexis Brown, Amy Hoaglund, Louise Daenekindt, Jacqueline Spiropoulos, Janae Hurst, Carly Ledbetter, Grace Dever and coxswain Abigail Harris, persevered and evened the race midway through before claiming the lead.
The crew was then able to maintain the lead down the stretch to finish in 6:21.7, eight seconds ahead of their competitors, who crossed the line at 6:29.9 seconds.
“The 2V8 obviously had the best result on the day,” King continued. “Despite a poor start, they kept their heads, found their rhythm, then went on to earn a win on the day.”
The first varsity eights opened the event, where the Hoyas were able to take the race with a time of 6:10.7. The Mountaineers finished the race seven seconds behind in 6:17.4.
In varsity fours, Georgetown paced West Virginia’s ‘A’ and ‘B’ boats. WVU’s ‘A’ boat trailed the Hoyas’ lone varsity four crew by 2.33 seconds. West Virginia’s ‘B’ boat came in 12.88 seconds behind the victors.
In the final race of the event, the Hoyas edged the Mountaineers in the third varsity eights race when they finished with a time of 6:34.1. WVU finished in 6:49.4 to close the official event.
“The 1V8 did a good job today of putting aside distractions from the past week to have a solid race performance. The 1V4 raced well in a tightly-contested race, but just didn't have that next gear at the end; that's something we'll certainly work on in the weeks ahead.”
The Mountaineers will take a week off from competition before returning to the water for the Big 12 duals, held in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, on April 8.
