March 01, 2017 03:18 PM | Women's Basketball
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Three West Virginia University student-athletes were honored with 2016-17 Philips 66 Big 12 Conference Women’s Basketball Awards, as selected by the league’s coaches on Wednesday. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own players.
Sophomore guard Tynice Martin was a unanimous All-Big 12 First Team selection, while senior center Lanay Montgomery picked up All-Big 12 Honorable Mention and earned a spot on the Big 12 All-Defensive Team. Junior forward Teana Muldrow garnered her first conference honor, as an All-Big 12 Honorable Mention.
“I am proud of Tynice, Lanay and Teana getting the recognition they deserve,” coach Mike Carey said. “They have worked hard all season and have been tremendous for us on and off the court. Tynice continues to improve day in and day out and has been a consistent scorer for us this season.”
“Lanay Montgomery has made great strides in her five years with the program,” Carey explained. "She will leave WVU as one of the best defender’s in program history and a great contributor to our community. Teana Muldrow is one of the most unselfish players in the country. She continues to work hard each day and is willing to play any position where we need her. Again, I am proud for all three of these ladies for their outstanding accomplishments this season.”
Martin, the 2016 Big 12 Freshman of the Year, led the Mountaineers and ranked second in the Big 12 with 17.8 points per game. She also ranked fourth in the league in steals (1.9 spg), sixth in free throw percentage (80.0%), eighth in three-point field goals made (2.0) and tied for 13th in field goal percentage (40.9%). The Atlanta native reached double-figure scoring in 28 of 30 contests this season and scored 20 or more points in nine games.
Martin was named the Big 12 Conference Player of the Week on Feb. 13 and to the NCAA’s Starting Five on Feb. 15 after recording back-to-back 30-point performances. She netted a career-high 35 points in a double-overtime loss at Oklahoma and added 30 points in a win over Oklahoma State, marking the first time since 2005 a Mountaineer had scored 30 or more points in consecutive games. Additionally, Martin scored 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for her first career double-double in West Virginia’s 83-73 win over No. 20/24 Oklahoma. In the nonconference schedule, Martin garnered Savannah Invitational MVP and All-Tournament honors. Her 533 points this season are fourth on WVU’s sophomore scoring chart and tied for 10th all-time, as she is the 16th Mountaineer to score 500 or more points in a season. The guard’s team-leading 61 three-pointers are sixth on West Virginia’s sophomore chart. Martin joins Bria Holmes as the only two Mountaineers to earn All-Big 12 First Team distinction as a sophomore.
Montgomery earned her second Big 12 All-Defensive team accolade and her second All-Big 12 recognition with the honorable mention selection this season. The Pittsburgh native reached double-figure scoring in 17 games and double-digit rebounding in 12 games, while posting a team-best 10 double-doubles this season. She scored a career-high 23 points, grabbed 18 rebounds and blocked five shots against Morehead State on Nov. 30, joining WVU Hall of Famer Georgeann Wells as the only Mountaineers in program history to achieve that feat. This season, Montgomery was a three-time WVU Student-Athlete of the Week selection and was tabbed to the NCAA’s Starting Five on Dec. 7. Earlier this spring, Montgomery was tabbed to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team.
Montgomery, an All-Big 12 Second Team selection a year ago, leads the Big 12 in field goal percentage (68.0%) and blocked shots per game (2.8 bpg). She is second in double-doubles (10), second in rebounding (9.1 rpg), second in offensive rebounding (3.3), fourth in defensive rebounding (5.8) and 25th in scoring (11.2 ppg). Through 127 career games, she has amassed 820 points, grabbed 898 rebounds and blocked 316 shots. Montgomery is second all-time in blocked shots at West Virginia and fourth in the Big 12. Her 898 rebounds are the fourth-most in a career at WVU. With notable improvements in her offensive game, Montgomery is on pace to break her own school-record in field goal percentage (68.0%) and is set to become the program’s field goal percentage leader (59.7%).
Muldrow grabs her first All-Big 12 honor after having her best season to date. The East Orange, New Jersey, native, reached double-figure scoring in 25 games, grabbed double-digit rebounds in 11 games and registered nine double-doubles this season. Muldrow ranked third in the Big 12 in rebounding (8.3 rpg), third in defensive rebounds (6.0), tied for third in double-doubles (9), seventh in scoring (14.7 ppg), seventh in free throw percentage (78.7%), eighth in offensive rebounds (2.6), 11th in steals (1.4 spg) and 15th in field goal percentage (47.9%).
Earlier this season, Muldrow helped lead the Mountaineers to a Savannah Invitational championship and earned all-tournament team honors. She scored a career-high 25 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in the win over TCU, while becoming the 33rd Mountaineer to reach the 1,000-point milestone. In the last regular season game against Kansas on Feb. 27, the junior scored 15 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to become the first Mountaineer since 2010 to register three consecutive double-doubles. She is 14th all-time at WVU with 609 career rebounds and is 12th on West Virginia’s all-time blocks list with 82.
Texas’ Karen Aston picked up her first Coach of the Year honor, while junior guard Brooke McCarty became the Longhorns’ first Player of the Year. Longhorn Brianna Taylor claimed Defensive Player of the Year and Kansas’ Jessica Washington was named Newcomer of the Year. Joyner Holmes (Texas) earned Freshman of the Year and Lauren Cox (Baylor) was chosen for the Sixth Man Award.
West Virginia opens action in the quarterfinal round of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Women’s Basketball Championship in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, on Saturday, March 4. The No. 6-seed Mountaineers will face No. 3-seed Oklahoma in a 9:30 p.m. contest at the Chesapeake Energy Arena. Saturday’s game will be televised locally on ROOT SPORTS Pittsburgh and on the FOX Sports Networks.
