MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – For the first time this season, a West Virginia University gymnast has collected a Big 12 Conference weekly honor, as sophomore Kirah Koshinski is the Big 12 Gymnast of the Week.
The honor is the sixth career conference weekly award for the Berwick, Pennsylvania, native, and her first gymnast of the week accolade. The 2016 Big 12 Newcomer of the Year, she was tabbed the newcomer of the week five times last season.
Koshinski’s honor follows her stellar performance in the No. 24-ranked Mountaineers’ 195.95-194.875 win at Kent State on Feb. 4, as she earned the vault and floor wins with matching 9.9 scores, as well as finished second on balance beam with a career-high 9.8 mark. She paces WVU with seven event wins this season, including four on floor, and shows 16 career event victories.
Ranked No. 3 in the conference on floor and vault, Koshinski has not scored below 9.85 on either event this season. She respectively ranks No. 13 and No. 14 nationally on the events.
Oklahoma’s Nicole Lehrmann was named the Big 12 Specialist of the Week for the first time this season, while teammate Maggie Nichols tallied her fourth Newcomer of the Week honor.
WVU (5-2, 1-1) continues its road swing on Sunday, Feb. 12, with a meet at Towson with Temple. Competition inside the SECU Arena in Towson, Maryland, is set to begin at 2 p.m.
